TOPSHELF OBSESSIONS: GABRIELLE UNION IN NOVEMBER ISSUE OF ESSENCE MAGAZINE
I’m a avid reader of Essence Magazine and was thoroughly excited to see my outwardly spoken, opinionated big sister in my head Gabrielle Union on the cover of the November 2016 issue. In her article she touched on her fears for her step sons as black boys in America right now, moving behind the scenes in Hollywood, her ridiculously uber cute marriage to NBA Star Dwyane Wade, and the validation game we play with ourselves as age sets in.

First can I ask who is ready for Being Mary Jane to come back in January??? I know right, I’m steadily catching myself on Netflix watching past seasons to fill the void. Her role as Mary Jane Paul is one that I can relate to, as I’m sure many other Black Women, all too well. I was surprised to find out in her interview with Essence that Mara Brock Akil, creator and Executive Producer of Girlfriends and The Game, who was also the creator and Executive Producer of Being Mary Jane has left the show. What will this mean? Gabby has assured us that the show is still worth the 60min block of time as we watch MJP evolve in New York City. This should be exciting!
As some of you may know, if you follow sports, the Wades are moving to Chicago since Dwyane will be playing for the Chicago Bulls now. This leaves Gabby in a fret for the safety of her husband and sons. She reveals:
Until they walk through the door, I’m terrified. Sometimes I want to stay off my timeline, because it makes those waits until they walk through the door a thousand times worse. Just envisioning them as a hashtag. One of my biggest fears is them being a hashtag on some bulls–t.
The star will be shooting the new season of Being Mary Jane and won’t be home a lot. Luckily, the family stays well connected through text messaging, snapchat, and I’m sure any other millions of ways there are to communicate these days. However she will miss her “best effin’ friend” Dwyane while shooting. She admits that at this time in her life she’d rather be with her man than racking up roles and living out of a suitcase stating:
Whatever job I take has to be worth it, because he’s like paradise…..I thoroughly enjoy him.
Doesn’t all that black love make you all warm inside? Gives women approaching a higher age in life hope that love like this still exists.
Looking back at her twenties compared to where she thought she’s be now, Gabrielle opens up how we validate ourselves with sameness to show that we’re on the right tracks of life. Which is so not the case and in only a Gabrielle Union witty straight no chaser way she says:
It’s like, I know I got it right because now I’m wearing a sweater set and I’m dressing age appropriate. Just because you have on a sweater set doesn’t make you more mature or mean you’re aging correctly. What the f–k does that mean? I’m not going to wear a f–king sweater set. I probably won’t when I’m 75. I’ll be in Marrakech with a hookah and learning new s–t in a crop top with my belly out…..When I realized that there was no prize when you die for having followed every rule and all that s–t, I was like, wait a second. Wait, so at my funeral you’re going to say I was appropriate? That’s a short obituary. I want my program to be The Iliad, and then, Oh s–t. She really got it in here, huh?
My sentiments exactly Gabby!
If you haven’t picked up the November 2016 issue of Essence please go do so now. It was such an amazing article. I couldn’t even touch on everything that enlightened me about this beauty.
Until next time.
