LET’S TALK HAIR: THE PERFECT COMBO FOR THE PERFECT TWIST AND CURL SET
If I told you I have been natural for almost 10 years now what would you say? I for sure would have lost of questions if I were you. I have made some mistakes, I have seen some success, and have experienced some re-verted failures when it comes to my hair. For the past two years my hair has been on a upward growth pattern with the use of the ItWorks Hair + Skin + Nails vitamins and consistent protective styling. Protective styling is easier because I hadn’t figured out what products worked best for my natural hair nor perfected a natural hair go to look. Up until now! I finally found the right product combo and style that I’ve fallen in love with AND on day 1 hair.

As a curly girl you may know Day 1 hair is typically not the desired look no matter how much fluffing you do to it. That was my dilemma. I would have perfectly defined curls from my twist outs but the shrinkage was at an all time high and then when I would use my pick it just became a tight frizzy mess. So what I did this time was start my twist out on stretched hair instead of wet hair.
But before that I knew I wanted to color my hair Jet Black due to not being a fan of the natural dark brown color of my own. I did my research of safe color systems for natural hair and decided to try the Shea Moisture Nourishing Moisture-Rich Color Creme in Jet Black. The packaging is very similar to most boxed hair color systems but the Shea Moisture Nourishing Moisture-Rich Color Creme is ammonia-free and sulfate-free which is really safe for natural hair. I loved that it came with a 2 floz of their Mongongo & Hemp Seed Oils High Porosity Moisture Correct Treatment Masque with Baobab Protein & Apple Cider Vinegar for deep conditioning. I think it’s genius that they added that in the packaging because adding color to your hair affects your hairs porosity. Super score for Shea Moisture!
With my hair sectioned into 4 I left this on for about 30 minutes under a plastic cap. After rinsing it all out I followed up with the As I Am Coconut Co-Wash which was AMAZE-ING! The smell was nice and coconut-y and the slip made it very easy for detangling. This for sure is my new go to cowash especially since I have two jars of it, each 16oz. At this point I can get out the shower and start the styling process. But before adding any stylers I added more moisture into my hair with the ItWorks Fractionated Coconut Oil and a good leave in, Cantu Shea Butter Leave-In Conditioning Cream. I’ve been using this since I decided to transition and it’s always been a main staple. I didn’t want to use the blow dryer deeply afraid of heat damage so I let my hair air dry for 2 hours and then used the blower on the cool setting to stretch out certain areas. Once that was complete it was time to get to twisting.
I used the flat-twist and perm rod technique to achieve my twist and curl set. Before flat-twisting each section I applied The Mane Choice’s Silk & Shine Leave-In + Detangler Conditioner for additional moisture and the DevaCurl Supercream Coconut Curl Styler starting about 2 inches away from the roots because I didn’t want my roots to start reverting and for the shrinkage to start. Once I got the flat-twist done to the point where it’s just a 2 strand twist I left out about 2-3inch of the ends and added DevaCurls Ultra Defining Gel and smoothed those ends around a white perm rod. I completed this around my entire head sectioning the front from ear to ear with the flat twist towards the front of my face until I had 10 in total. The back of my head I sectioned into two (a lower undercut area and top middle). The lower undercut area I made 4 flat-twist while the middle top area had 5. Being that I do my hair the night before I just put on my bonnet and went to sleep. The next morning I took it down and was in love!
So far I’ve been able to get away with making this look stretch for 2 days. With more regular co-washes and sticking to this combo let’s see if I can train my curls to the point to get it to last at least 3 days lol. If you haven’t perfected your twist outs try this method and or combo.
I’m sure you’re going to love the results!

Day 2 Hair
Until next time!
