LET’S TALK HAIR: THE IMPORTANCE OF DEEP CONDITIONING
Is your hair dry and brittle? Well maybe it wouldn’t be if you added some moisture to your hair. If you really sat down and thought about all the trauma and stress you put your hair through and then ask yourself when is the last time you deep conditioned I wonder how long it would take you to come up with an answer. Yea that’s what I thought! Even though I use great and effective plant based Hair Skin and Nail vitamins to grow my hair I also believe in a healthy hair regimen.
Keep reading on why its so important to get into a routine of deep conditioning, how often you should be deep conditioning, and what I use as a added bonus to keep my hair healthy and moisturized.
SO WHY ARE DEEP CONDITIONERS IMPORTANT?
Whether your hair is relaxed or natural deep conditioning is vital to repair damaged hair, promote hair growth, and maintain healthy hair. All hair types benefits from a good deep conditioning routine but African American hair needs it most as its natural state is more dry than others. Restoring moisture to the hair allows it to retain length, great luster, shine, and strength.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU DEEP CONDITION?
Being that our hair is drier than most, add in heat damage, and continuos manipulation a weekly deep conditioning treatment is ideal. All deep conditioning consist of is leaving any type of conditioner on the hair for 20-30 minutes ideally under heat. That could be under a hooded dryer, or a plastic cap and wool hat over that so your head could create your own heat. This is normally done proceeding a shampoo routine or a co-wash routine. For added benefit you can mix in essential oils in your conditioners. One of my favorites is coconut oil. Coconut oil has so many benefits for not only the hair shaft but the scalp as well. It absorbs deeper and faster into the shaft of the hair than other oils and promotes healthy hair growth and a healthy scalp fighting against dandruff and lice.
WHAT ARE MY GO TO HEALTHY HAIR FAVES?
Every since I was in college I’ve dabbled in HSN vitamins or various brands. All promising longer fuller hair but falling short on the expectations. I’ve been using Hair + Skin + Nails vitamins from ItWorks since 2015 and my hair grown tremendously which I document in photos on my Instagram page @iamsummerterry. I’ve also been a huge lover on CANTU Shea Butter products since I decided to go natural in 2010. My initial entrance into the natural scene was as a transition(er) and the CANTU Shea Butter Leave-In-Conditioning Cream has been a main staple. I use it as a deep conditioner as well as a leave in for when I do the LOC Method (I’ll discuss that more in another post). I’m all about added moistures as I notice my hair absorbs product rather quickly leaving it very dry. To combat that I add ItWorks Fractionated Coconut Oil to my conditioner to retain moisture a little longer.
I’m currently on a hair journey to waist length hair. If anyone would like to join me on this healthy hair journey to your hair goals email me those hair goals at [email protected]. We can do this together!
